In an article for the Chartered College Cara Carey, Development Lead, Teach First tells us that research suggests if we are to create an environment where students can excel, we must prioritise the wellbeing of teachers. Improved teacher wellbeing facilitates improved pupil wellbeing (Harding et al., 2019; Ramberg et al., 2019), while the negative impact of teachers’ poor wellbeing seems to be greater for students who are already disadvantaged (Ramberg et al., 2019). If teachers prioritise their own wellbeing, they are likely to have greater capacity to effectively manage student behaviour, which will create a better learning environment (Bates, 2021).
Benefits to your staff
The Complete Human Strategy looks at 6 dimensions of working life and gives staff a structured approach to collectively and individually influence their work environment and access the support they need.
Staff feel empowered by a framework that enables them to feed back how they are feeling, and have a say in their work environment
Teams are empowered to collectively set boundaries and optimal working practices together
Your CHS Lead is plugged in to a wider network of wellbeing leads around the country, with regular updates, newsletters, support and resources
Causes of workplace stress are minimised as the CHS enables you to identify individual, team, departmental and organisational challenges to wellbeing
Where stress occurs, staff needs are identified and supported earlier, signposting to in-house or external sources of support, and leading to lower levels of absenteeism through stress.
In ASSET schools where the CHS is fully embedded staff report significantly better wellbeing outcomes than in national surveys.
Improved staff retention, as staff feel valued and listened to
Improved recruitment - candidates at interview regularly tell us that the Complete Human Strategy influenced them to apply to an ASSET school
The CHS brings benefits to the MAT itself - new schools joining ASSET have told us that the Complete Human Strategy approach influenced their decision to join us.
Benefits to your pupils
We have tracked pupil wellbeing in ASSET schools using ImpactEd as an external evaluator. In 2024, across our trust, our children's sense of school membership was 14% above the national average, and overall wellbeing consistently above the national average and rising over the last 5 years.
In our flagship CHS school Ilketshall St Lawrence, children's sense of school membership is 24% higher than the national average, and pupil wellbeing and engagement 13% higher than national. Ilketshall was winner of the Suffolk Education Awards Wellbeing Award in 2023.
Where children's anxiety is higher and wellbeing lower, ImpactEd stats tell us there is a stronger correlation with attendance. Its a no-brainer that good wellbeing improves attendance.
Using the CHS improves children's own emotional literacy, and our school programme empowers pupil voice, and gives us a framework to respond to it.
The CHS approach adds value to traditional approaches like Thrive that are based on teacher observation, with half-termly check in points that ask children how they feel across our pillars.
The CHS helps to identify specific needs, and is a powerful "upstream" tool enabling school staff to identify wellbeing challenges long before that can be simply addressed before they become big issues.
The CHS is an excellent tool to support children with SEND, particularly children who have SEMH needs and those struggle with challenging behaviour. We use the CHS framework as an assessment and support tool in our MAT alternative provision ASSET Flourish.
Benefits to parents, families and your wider school community
The Complete Human Strategy framework also targets the other adults in your school community.
Parents feel engaged and cared for by the school
Well being challenges are identified early in a low threat universal approach, empowering parents to start conversations, seek support and identify solutions
Support and signposting is "upstreamed" enabling people to seek help when they first identify something is not right
A strong culture is established around the school community where everyone asks "how are you?"
Relationships are improved as parents and school staff have a shared language around wellbeing
Parents can use CHS strategies, language and questions as a tool to explore children's wellbeing at school, and help children to express their needs at school
Local organisations offering wellbeing and support have a framework and calendar to offer support to your families and school community
